Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping surgery – most commonly known as a nose job – consistently ranks among the top five cosmetic surgery procedures for both men and women. The process involved in a rhinoplasty surgery will differ slightly for each individual patient, regardless of gender, depending on the original nose shape and the desired result.
However, although the basic surgery is the same whether you are a man or a woman, there are small differences between male and female rhinoplasty surgery.
Anatomical differences between the genders
One major factor in determining a difference between rhinoplasty for men and rhinoplasty for women is the anatomical differences between male and female noses. Generally, men’s noses tend to be larger, with a broader base, larger nostrils and a more prominent bridge.
On the other hand, women’s noses are usually (but not always) more delicate, and the nostrils tend to be smaller. There is also a difference in the angle between the upper lip and the septum, with female noses usually tilted slightly upwards.
As a general rule, men’s skin is also thicker than women’s, which can affect the outcome as well as the surgical technique required. Male cartilage can be stronger, meaning there is a stronger support structure for any surgical intervention – women’s softer cartilage often requires some extra reinforcement to ensure the longevity of results.
Differences in desired results
Often, what female rhinoplasty patients are trying to achieve with surgery is precisely what is detailed above – a smaller, more delicate nose that tilts slightly upwards. While men might actually want to create a stronger profile.
So, rhinoplasty for women often involves sculpting the nasal bridge to reduce its prominence and enhancing the tip to create a slight upward angle.
Male rhinoplasty, on the other hand, might involve the creation of a stronger bridge, a widening of the nasal base and, if anything, a slight downward angle to the tip.
Individual requirements
Of course, this is a sweeping generalisation across each gender, and many women wish to create a stronger nasal profile, just as many men wish to reduce the prominence of their noses.
The important thing is to first select a plastic surgeon who you trust to listen to your requirements and honestly tell you whether your goal is realistic and, if not, what you can hope to achieve from surgery.
Ask to see the results of rhinoplasty surgeries they have performed on both men and women and, if possible, examples of the result you hope to achieve. You should look for a surgeon whose approach varies to suit each patient’s individual needs. If you see ‘cookie-cutter’ results, it can indicate that the surgeon is not tuning in to individual patient needs.
