A lipoma is a soft, rubbery lump of fatty tissue beneath the skin’s surface. They can occur anywhere in the body where there are fat deposits but are most commonly found on the upper torso. They are slow growing and can vary in size, from just a few millimetres to 10cm or more.
The first step is to arrange a consultation with a specialist who can give you a correct diagnosis and advise whether you require treatment.
Lipomas are usually harmless. In rare cases, a deeper lipoma growing in a confined space may press on sensitive organs such as the nerves, causing pain and discomfort and necessitating removal.
If the lump is red, hot, painful, or hard and does not move, it might be a sign of something more serious.
For most patients, the decision to have a lipoma removed is to address cosmetic concerns, mainly if it is located in a visible place, and this is typically a straightforward dermatology procedure.
At Karidis Clinic, we perform surgical excisions for lipoma removal using a local anaesthetic. Performed by a leading plastic surgeon, the lipoma is carefully excised with a scalpel, leaving a small scar in its place when fully healed.
Our surgeon will inject local anaesthetic into the treatment area before making an incision into your skin to cut out the lump. If necessary, it may be sent for histological examination at the hospital. It will be tested for any abnormalities which may indicate cancer. He will then use stitches or medical glue to close the skin.

Most cysts are painless, cause no symptoms and are harmless. However, if a cyst becomes infected or inflamed or affects normal bodily function, it may be advisable to remove it. Aesthetically, you may wish to remove a cyst particularly if it’s in a highly visible place.
Skin tags are a common skin concern and while harmless, they can be unsightly if visible and cause discomfort if they snag on clothing or jewellery. They can be easily removed.
