Moles are common skin lesions formed by a proliferation of pigmented skin cells, known as melanocytes, clustered together. Moles, or naevi, are benign and vary in size and shape. They are usually brown or black, can appear flat or raised, and can appear all over the body. You can be born with them, or they can develop during childhood and early adulthood. However, you can develop them throughout your life, particularly during hormonal changes.
Melanoma, which is a type of skin cancer, is also derived from an over-proliferation of melanocytes. About 30 per cent of melanomas begin in existing moles, while the rest appear in normal-looking skin.
The first step is to arrange a consultation with a specialist who can give you a correct diagnosis and advise whether you require treatment.
