What is a skin tag?

Skin lumps and bumps are abnormalities that occur on the skin’s surface or just below the dermis’s upper layer. The good news is that most of these blemishes are benign, which means non-cancerous, but can be a cosmetic concern.

Skin tags are a common skin lesion. They are small, soft growths that hang off your skin. While harmless, they can be unsightly if visible and cause discomfort if they snag on clothing or jewellery.

They often appear in areas of friction, such as the neck, armpits and groin. They can vary in size from a few millimetres to as big as 5cm and can be composed of blood vessels, skin and collagen fibres.

The first step is to arrange a consultation with a specialist who can give you a correct diagnosis and advise whether you require treatment or further investigation.

Why might you want your skin tag removed?

While skin tags are harmless and typically do not cause any discomfort, they can affect self-confidence and patients might not like how they look or the area of the body where they are located. Patients can often have multiple skin tags and want them all removed.

How is skin tag removal performed?

Karidis Clinic offers excision or cryotherapy for skin tag removal, both performed under local anaesthetic.

During cryotherapy, the skin tag is frozen with liquid nitrogen and a scab forms. The scab will fall off after a week or two. This is a straightforward, quick approach.

In surgical excision, our surgeon will numb the treatment area with local anaesthetic before cutting off the tag. If necessary, it may be sent for histological examination at the hospital. It will be tested for any abnormalities which may indicate cancer. Stitches may be required for larger skin tags; otherwise, we cauterise the wound to stop any bleeding.

The appropriate technique depends on the size and location and if multiple skin tags require removal. We can remove skin tags from anywhere on the body.

A lipoma is a soft, rubbery lump of fatty tissue beneath the skin’s surface and, in most cases, they are totally harmless. For most patients, the decision to have a lipoma removed is to address cosmetic concerns, mainly if it is located in a visible place.
